Can a Bear Get Through a Chain Link Fence?

If you’re working in remote parts of North America, Europe, and other places that bears call home, you need to protect yourself. Most bear species usually don’t attack people indiscriminately, but they tend to be extra hungry in the fall and springtime, and anything can happen!

One of the more common questions about perimeter bear security is whether a bear gets through a chain link fence. Here’s what you need to know.

Bears Can Get Through Chain Link Fences

Bears are incredibly strong. If they decide they want to get through your chain link fence or gate and apply even a little of that strength to the task, they can make a large enough hole to go right through your fence quite easily.

They Can Also Go Over Them

Bears are also very good climbers, so even if they don’t feel like tearing a hole in your chain link fence, they might go over it.

There are some great pictures of a bear making short work of a wildlife fence in Alberta, Canada, recently, so you can see how this is done!

How to Prevent Bears Getting Through Or Over Your Chain Link Fence

The good news is that even if the answer to the question can a bear get through a chain link fence is not what you wanted to hear, there are steps you can take to prevent them from getting through your fence.

The solution is to add electric fence wires on the outside face of your chain link fence.

An electric fence is an excellent bear deterrent, and because it can be installed using solar panels, it can be used in even the most remote locations.
