Can Double Gates Have Different Size Leaves, and Why Might You Want That?

Usually, when you’re installing double gates, symmetry is one of the important criteria. However, sometimes, having both gate leaves the same size can be a problem.

Let’s take a closer look at what asymmetrical double leaf gates are, why you might need them, and how you can get them if you do.

What Are Asymmetrical Leaf Double Gates?

When double gates have two different size leaves or halves, they’re called asymmetrical leaf double gates. The difference in size between the two leaves can be minimal, or it could be more dramatic, but if the width of the two sides of the gate are different, it’s an asymmetrical leaf double swing gate.

Why Would You Need an Asymmetrical Leaf Double Gate?

The most common reason why people need to have an asymmetrical leaf double gate is space. When there’s less space for the gate to swing on one side than the other, using different gate leaf widths can solve the problem.

Sometimes, asymmetrical double leaf gates are also used where different types of access is required. So, for instance, one leaf may be designed for pedestrian access and the other for vehicle access. As long as both have a drop bolt mechanism, they can be opened independently for each type of user.

How Can You Get an Asymmetrical Leaf Double Gate?

As you can probably imagine, asymmetrical leaf double gates are not an off the shelf item, because every design will be a little different. Sometimes, if you work with a supplier who has ready made gate frames, and depending on the type of gate, you might be able to combine two gates to make an asymmetrical double leaf gate.

However, in most cases, you will need to take measurements of the gate opening, decide on the size of each leaf, and have one made to order.

What Kind of Gates Can Be Asymmetrical Leaf Double Gates?

In theory, any type of gate could be designed to be an asymmetrical leaf double gate, so you could have a chain link, welded mesh, ornamental or bar, wooden or vinyl gate that is manufactured this way. The trick is to find someone who can manufacture gates to order, or who has a large range of premade gates in a variety of sizes that you can mix and match.

Can You Install an Asymmetrical Leaf Gate By Yourself?

That depends on your skill level. If you know how to hang gates, and you have the tools to do the job, then this is not so different to hanging a standard double swing gate.

Sometimes, you may have different gate posts and hardware for one of the gate leaves, if that side is significantly heavier, so make sure you know exactly what goes where!

If you have any doubts about your ability to install this type of double swing gate, our advice is to find a reliable contractor who specializes in the type of gate you want, and let them do the job for you.
