How to Install a Chain Link Fence Gate On a Slope

In a perfect world, we’d all be able to find a section of our fence line that is level, where we can install a gate without any trouble. However, we don’t live in a perfect world!

This means that there are lots of people out there looking for information about how to install a chain link fence gate on a slope. We’ve got an easy option to convert standard chain links and other gates to be installed on a slope.

A Double Leaf and Sliding Gate Problem

If you’re wondering how to install a chain link fence gate on a slope and the gate in question is going to be a single swing gate, the solution is quite simple. Find someone who can build a gate that follows the slope and then hinge it on the longer side of the gate. This will allow your single-leaf gate to swing, even on a slope.

However, the same does not apply to double-leaf gates and sliding gates.

With double leaf gates, one of the sides of the gate will not be able to swing open if you create a gate with a sloped bottom rail, and sliding gates that are installed level cannot also follow a slope.

So if you’re planning a fence, the simplest way to avoid having to deal with the issue of how to install a chain link fence gate on a slope is to put these kinds of gates on a level portion of the site.

Installing Gates On a Slope When You Can’t Choose a Level Location

Of course, sometimes, you just can’t install your gate where your site is nice and flat and level. As illustrated in our drawing, one solution is to have custom fence panels manufactured that will close the gap under the gate when the gate is closed but which are hinged and can be lifted and latched out of the way when you need to open and close the gate.

When this kind of hinged panel is installed on a sliding or cantilever gate, it’s sometimes called a sweeper bar.

This kind of solution can solve the problem of how to install chain link fence gates on a slope, but it can also be adapted to other kinds of gates. In fact, you could build these kinds of custom panels for wood gates, vinyl gates, and more.

Automation Problems

One thing you need to remember when you use this solution to the problem of installing a chain link fence gate on a slope is that you will have to manually raise and lower the hinged panel at the bottom of your gate.

This does make automating this kind of gate difficult, if not impossible. So if you want to add a gate operator to your gate, you might have to come up with a different solution for your gate, which might even include creating a custom “speed bump” under the gate that raises the ground level, closes the gap, but is still easy to drive over.

As you can imagine, that kind of solution to the problem of installing gates on a slope is a lot more expensive, so if you can avoid that kind of gate installation, it’s much better to choose another option!
