Whether you have an existing fence that you want to install a new pedestrian gate in or you’re planning a new fence project, you might be wondering what the typical size of a garden gate is.

As you might have already discovered, there isn’t much in the fence world that’s “typical,” but we’ve got some basic information for you.

What Else Are Garden Gates Called?

The first thing you should probably know is that there are many names for garden gates. They’re also known as single-swing gates, single-leaf gates, and man gates. Sometimes they’re also called pedestrian gates.

Whatever you happen to call them, though, they are gates that consist of one panel with hinges on one side and a latch on the other.

What Types of Garden Gates Do You Get?

The next thing you might be wondering is what types of garden gates do you get. Will you find one to match your fence?

The good news is that there are matching gates for most types of fence, so whether you want a chain link, wood, vinyl or ornamental single swing gate, you will probably find what you need.

What Is the Typical Width of a Garden Gate?

The first important dimension you need to know for garden gates is the standard or typical width they usually come in.

In most cases, a single leaf gate will be about 3 or 4 feet, or 900mm to 1200mm. Most fence manufacturers do carry wider sizes, too, so you will probably also be able to find slightly wider gates if you need them.

It’s important to remember that the wider a gate gets, the more it will weigh, so if you are planning a wider garden gate, you might need to increase the hinge post size.

What Is the Typical Height of a Garden Gate?

The next thing you need to know about typical garden gate sizes is the heights they usually come in.

When you’re talking about residential fences, the most common heights are 4, 5, and 6’, or 1200mm, 1500mm, and 1800mm. The gate panel itself is usually about 50mm or 2 inches shorter than that to allow for ground clearance when your gate swings.

What If You Need Custom Size Gates?

Most fence companies will be willing to accommodate custom garden gate sizes, but they will probably have to manufacture the gate to fit your desired gate opening size.

This usually increases the cost of the gate, and since manufacturing takes time, you might wait a little longer for your fence project to be completed.

The exception to this is for garden gates made from fence materials that can be assembled or built on-site, like vinyl gates or wood gates. These are usually built to the size required anyway, so there probably won’t be a big change in your fence project or quote.

Where Can You Buy Garden Gates?

Most big box hardware stores carry a range of garden gates in various materials. These are always standard sizes, though, so you can’t get any special sizes from this type of outlet.

Fence companies and distributors usually have more sizes available, so if you need something that isn’t available off the hardware store shelf, that should be your next stop.

The final option is to find a fence company that also manufactures gates. They will be able to do anything outside of the ordinary for you.
