Gauge (wire)

Gauge (wire)

wire gauge is another way of expressing the diameter or thickness of the wire.

wire gauge is more commonly used to describe wire diameter in North America, while many other countries express the diameter in millimeters.

Commonly used wire gauges in North America include 12.5 gauge, 9 gauge and 6 gauge. The higher the number of the wire, the thinner the wire is. So 6 gauge wire is thicker than 9 gauge wire, which is thicker than 12.5 gauge wire.

Usually, when talking about galvanized and PVC coated wire, the gauge includes the plastic coating, unless the specification stipulates the size of the wire core.
