How Tall Is a Standard Chain Link Fence?
One of the biggest mistakes people who aren’t in the fence industry make is believing that there are standard fences. There may be fence standards, but there’s no such thing as a standard fence.
So, while we can’t tell you the answer to the question of how tall is a standard chain link fence, we can give you some other information that might help.
Different Cities Have Different Regulations
The first thing that might help you to figure out how tall a standard chain link fence is in your area is speaking to your local building department.
Most cities and regions have regulations about how high a fence can be, and this usually depends on where it’s installed and what type of property it is.
Usually, the maximum height for a chain link fence around a backyard will be around 6 or 7 feet or about 1.8 or 2.1 meters. This can also be changed by getting permission from the local municipality, but that’s usually as high as you can go without special applications.
Many cities also require a lot more paperwork and blueprints if you want to go over the maximum allowable height, so if you can avoid this, it’s a good idea!
Different Fence Lines Have Different Height Requirements
Another factor to consider when you’re trying to find out how tall is a standard chain link fence is where the fence will be installed.
So far, we’ve spoken about backyard fences, but if you are fencing a front yard, you might only be able to go up to 3 or 4 feet, or 900 millimeters to 1200 millimeters.
Again, you can speak to your local municipal building department to find out what your city’s regulations say.
What Standard Heights Does Chain Link Come In?
Just because there is no standard height for chain link fence, that doesn’t mean that chain link fence fabric does not come in standard heights!
Most chain link fence manufacturers make chain link fence fabric in one-foot height increments, starting at about 3 feet.
So the “off the shelf” options for chain link fence height are 3’, 4’,5’,6’,7’,8’,9’ and so on. Most manufacturers also weave fence up to 12 or even 14’ heights.
Extending the Height of Chain Link Fence
Even after you choose the fabric for your chain link fence, which does not mean that will be the total fence height.
Many fences also include an overhang or extension that has barbed wire, razor wire or even an electric fence above the chain link portion of the fence. This usually adds at least another foot to the height of the fence.
Speak to a Local fence Professional
The best way to figure out what the allowable standard heights for chain link fence in your area are is to speak to a local fence company that specializes in chain link fences.
They probably install this kind of fence every day and should be able to advise you what your options are.
